This assumes you have mkvtoolnix, ffmpeg, and sox installed and that you’ve already ripped the movie into a mkv container with an ac3 audio track. Instead we’ll need to mix the Rifftrax with the movie’s audio into a new combined audio track and add that to the movie. It’s not enough to just plop the Rifftrax audio into the movie as an alternate audio track on its own, since then you really will hear “Just the Jokes” with no audio from the actual movie at all. Since I’m in the process of ripping all of my DVDs and Blu-rays to my Plex server, I decided to devise a way to incorporate the Rifftrax audio directly as an alternate audio track. I hate having to use a second audio device to play them while I watch the movie, though. I’m not even going to talk about how much I love Mystery Science Theater 3000 right now, but suffice it to say I also love Rifftrax and own a bunch of “Just the Jokes” audio commentaries.

If you don’t have this free software yet, you can download it. Unfortunately, whenever you use someone else’s creations for your own benefit, you may need to ask permission. If you browse on Reddit and other platforms, you’ll see some people think that as long as you only use a limited section – a few seconds, for example – of a favorite song as background, you’re not crossing copyright boundaries. Lastly, don’t fall into the trap of misconceptions. However, make sure the final product isn’t libelous or defamatory. Often, if you use someone else’s footage – a news story or a piece of a movie – to review or discuss it, you’re welcome to do it and share it with others. In many other circumstances, you need to consider fair use rights. If you plan on selling content, you must ensure you’re not using footage that is covered by copyright. However, be careful if you’re working with files that you ripped or obtained through other means than legal purchases. Also, if you want to know how to strip audio from a video file of content you’ve purchased and it’s meant for your own use without the intent of distributing and selling it, have your fun.

If it’s your own footage, it’s up to you how you want to change it. While we want you to have fun with modern software and your videos, remember that you carry some responsibility in handling any recorded content.
